I know it’s good that people are realizing immigration is not simply a non-Black Hispanic problem, but I’m still furious. Haitians have been talking about this since at least the earthquake and have been shutdown multiple times. Where was this solidarity then?
We have been screaming for attention for years. Haitians have been stuck in Tijuana for years trying to get into the US. When TPS was under attack, Haitians were right there marching, trying to get your attention. YOU chose to ignore us
YOU chose to continue thinking immigration wasn’t a Black issue. YOU ignored our cries for help. But now you care because the Revolution is beginning? You care now because you’re just now learning about our independence and history? WHERE WERE YOU BEFORE?!
Every day for 7 years I’ve listened to my mom interpret for families targeted by ICE. Every day for 7 years I heard the horror stories of immigrants trying to seek asylum. But now it’s an issue. I don’t care if it’s simply not knowing, I get to be angry.
You MUST acknowldge why you have allowed the narrative to exclude us for so long in your head. Because we’ve been talking about this for a very long time. You MUST acknowldge how you have participated in our erasure. This is anti-Haitianism at its finest. We only matter when
it benefits your narrative. We are only victims when you can attach yourselves to us. Otherwise we’re invisible. And that’s bullshit.
Haiti is a country that has been invaded and tampered with by the US and Europe since the first day we called ourselves free. Haitians have always been a part of the immigration conversation, because we have always been run out of our home.
We have always been here. We have always been suffering. You just weren’t paying attention.
