Wiley’s tweet is not a singularity. Anti-Semitism is deeply routed in society. I got called ‘Jew’ more times than ‘Jake’ throughout school. I never understood why people were obsessed. I wore my label as a badge, tried to embrace it. But it didn’t make it hurt any less.
Most people were not doing so maliciously, it was all ‘banter’. They were sheep following the crowd. But that’s exactly the problem. The general acceptance of hurtful comments made towards Jews. The jokes about the Holocaust formed with a lack of basic historical understanding.
Europe has seen a dangerous rise in the far right and anti-Semitism movements. We need to speak out when someone is being targeted. If you are Jewish, stand up and protect your identity. I wish I did. I may have kept it quiet, but my school years damaged me.
