I get why AOC wants to ban military recruitment in high schools. There needs to a serious rethinking of JROTC if not elimination but overall it'll hard those she is trying to help to not to at least present the options like any other job.
Underneath all the hooah hooah dog and pony patriotic bullshit is the progressive vision of America. For many Americans esp PoC, the military is the only option for guaranteed education, guaranteed food, clothing and housing subsidies, free healthcare, credit consolidation.
And not just for you. For your spouse + kids. There's a limited number of jobs that don't require degrees that offer people these benefits at signing up. My hypothetical kid will not have to pay for one cent of institution of any Tx public college or university b/c of my service
It would be great if more jobs do this. In exchange for these benefits the military will deploy you to wars civilians say they hate so much but do less than goddamn nothing to stop. You want these high school kids not to go to Afghanistan, actually protest. It's not hard.
I really wish I didn't have to trade drowning in student debt for chronic back pain/nerve damage and fear of developing crazy respiratory diseases from burn pits. I'm lucky. Many people in my medical unit had spinal fusion at 22. The military fucks you up for those benefits.
The problem with the public's idea of the military is y'all treat it like a mystical thing instead of a job. You spend a fuckton of time playing phone games, surfing youtube and just bored as hell in between moments of awesomeness. You work, get paid.
The military should be presented in high school and colleges as a potential job. No more no less. You know what you're deploying to if you sign up now. People can make up their damn own mind.
