I appreciated this from this morning's @theAMshakeout newsletter. Most of the races taking place are within the rules, but I think this is about our larger failure at the government level. The rules are flawed, because they continue to lead to the spread of Covid. (cont.)
Is it fair to ask a pro runner not to travel to race when a family can fly to Disney World or an amateur runner can fly to run in 1000-person race? Pros who opt out of opportunities due to public health concerns may be more likely to be punished than rewarded by their sponsors.
Sponsors are in a tough spot because many will likely have to make cuts. But I'd like to see (and hear about) more sponsors who are relieving that pressure and encouraging their athletes to stay local. If that's what we celebrate, maybe we'll see more of it.
As Mario said, even young people have no way of knowing how they will be affected, or what the long-term consequences are. I'd hate for high level running/runners to have to have to learn this the hard way.
Covid testing is massively backed up at the moment, which has significant public health ramifications. Some have questioned whether it makes sense for healthy athletes to add to the testing burden just so they can compete. The pandemic is hard, but I think we can do better.
