The governing body for state championships for its more than 800 member high schools is a not-for-profit organization. It offers state title series in 14 boys sports, 14 girls sports and 10 other scholastic activities and provides certification of event officials. 2/9
Fall sports were scheduled to begin regular practices on Aug. 10. They are football, boys and girls golf, boys and girls cross country, girls swimming and diving and girls volleyball. 3/9
High school sports have not had organized contests since mid-March, when the Class 1A-2A boys basketball series at the Peoria Civic Center was called off on the eve of the state semifinals. 4/9
Summer workouts and conditioning without physical contact have been allowed under the Phase 3 and Phase 4 guidelines of the state’s Restore Illinois revitalization plan. 5/9
The meeting follows the Illinois Elementary School Association’s decision of July 23 to cancel most fall sports. Greg Hall, executive director of the Southern Illinois Junior High School Athletics Association plans to make a decision on fall sports on Monday, Aug. 3. 6/9
The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus have declined for three straight days, with 1,076 on Tuesday. However, Illinois hasn’t been under 1,000 since July 21 and under 500 since June 22. Illinois has had 173,731 positive cases, 7,446 deaths, 95% recovery rate, 7/9
During a tour of the state, Gov. J.B. Pritzker expressed misgivings and concerns about conducting fall sports during the pandemic. 8/9
The Let Us Play Illinois High School Sports petition at http://change.org had more than 19,100 signatures as of Wednesday morning. Copies of both were sent to the IHSA and the governor’s office. 9/9
