Rich people break the law every day and get away with it. But y'all think the law will stop Trump from declaring the election is postponed due to COVID-19 and that it will prevent Republican states from cooperating. He doesn't need a real postponement to derail the process.
He just needs to create chaos & secure the complicity of enough Republican officials. These are things he knows how to do. He needs the election to be incomplete in some way so he can claim there was no real election. Is this really more far fetched than anything else he's done?
It's like some of you are living in a different country. How many laws has he already broken? Look at the increasingly erratic and emboldened decisions he's making. Y'all won't be able to stop something you won't acknowledge is possible.
I would also like to remind everyone that I've warned y'all about Trump's fascist escalations for years and have consistently been right. The "he can't do that, it's illegal" folks cannot say the same.
The issue here is faith. Some liberals believe in the system to such an extent that they believe the mechanism will always right itself in the end if people do their part and vote, which is a fucking joke.
Some people grab onto this framework in the absence of faith, simply bc it demands so little of them. So they wear electoral choices as political identity. That may sound harsh, but society is set up to encourage this, so I'm not really judging here so much as naming a dynamic.
Those of us who understand what's happening need to start with the persuadable: people who are freaked out and don't have faith the system will save them, but have no real political home outside of electoral politics and don't know what to do. There are many such people.
This is why I accepted Truthout's offer to launch my own podcast, even tho I had never considered doing such a thing and had no clue how to do it -- so I could create resources that would help people organize their way thru this. (There are transcripts.) https://truthout.org/audio/how-to-fight-fascism-while-surviving-a-plague/
It is crucial to understand how Trump's alignments and escalations fit within a fascist framework. https://truthout.org/audio/the-cops-are-with-the-fascists-how-police-terror-and-trumpism-converge/
In this episode, I talked with@shane_burley1 about Trump's fed squads and fascist escalation. This is one of the most important episodes we've made IMO. https://truthout.org/audio/trumps-shockingly-dangerous-fed-squads-expand-their-reach/
This week, I talked about unrest & respectability, which are also areas where reality clashes with a lot of establishment and liberal takes on what's happening. A lot of folks cannot seem to admit that they were educated for a world that no longer exists. https://truthout.org/audio/unrest-is-not-the-enemy-fascism-is/
Folks who are saying intelligence agencies won't allow Trump to go full autocrat and overstay his welcome: those agencies do hate him, but please check out what Trump's done to the chain of command in the U.S. intelligence apparatus, apparently while some of you weren't looking.
I made noise about this back in February: "Trump has appointed the US ambassador to Germany, a combative loyalist, to his administration’s most senior intelligence post, in his continuing effort to wield personal control over the spy agencies." https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/feb/19/trump-richard-grenell-director-national-intelligence
When I raised the alarm about this, some folks were like, "If you think U.S. intelligence agencies weren't already evil, you know nothing." Some folks lack imagination. Bad can always get worse. History makes that clear.
