To my former colleagues at @wamu885, @jjyore's denials about special treatment for Martin Di Caro are false. @andimcdaniel told me about Martin's harassment record in the first week or so after I arrived at the station in October 2016. https://dcist.com/story/20/07/29/martin-dicaro-wamu-allegations-misconduct/
Andi essentially told me that Martin's conduct was terrible, but he was a great reporter. In a follow up meeting days later, @jjyore asked me how I planned to manage Martin's conduct. I asked @jjyore what HE had done about it. The answer was basically nothing.
Within weeks, I had a meeting w/ Martin and @wamu885's Carey Needham, and I told him directly that whatever he'd done in the past, I wasn't going to tolerate harassment in the newsroom. I thought he'd gotten the message. Reading this story, I know now that I was sorely mistaken.
Early in my tenure, Martin loudly bullied and berated a female colleague in the newsroom. Having been told about the "Level III" warning, I met w/ @jjyore and pointed out that --under AU policy-- we could have him fired. @jjyore dismissed it out of hand.
I value discretion and confidentiality, but using that to allow powerful people to tell self-serving lies is wrong.
