Ok. We need to talk about this (from the LTC Staffing Report released yesterday).
https://www.ontario.ca/page/long-term-care-staffing-study
1. FP LTC homes have the lowest PSW hourly wage ranges (no surprise there...you make profit but first cutting on labour).

2. Not for profit homes appear to be mimicking the practices of FP homes (did you know some actually contract FP management to run their homes? 🤨).
3. Homecare PSW wages are by FAR the worst. This is an important point that I’ve discussed in my research and advocacy. As one way to avoid putting the necessary 💰 into fixing LTC, governments have shifted to the “homecare” alternative...which we KNOW doesn’t work for this pop.
4. People who go into LTC have far greater care needs than current homecare models can meet. They often tried to stay "home" as long as they could but it's impossible given that (CONT.)
5.
A) The daily homecare allotments for high needs clients are a joke.
B) Much of the work is contracted out to private companies (cost-saving measure) who pay their PSWs TERRIBLE wages & work them to near death. This then reduces the quality of care homecare recipients receive.
6. This is why we CAN'T abandon LTC for homecare. We need both, yes...but not as they exist right now. Right now, nobody wins but governments + private companies who save costs by privatizing this care & in turn hurting those who need quality care the most- the clients/residents.
7. All of this ALSO explains these stats:
*~40% of PSWs leave the health care sector after graduating or within a year of training.
* Turnover is highest for part-time & casual positions predominantly held by entry-level PSWs.
*50% of PSWs leave the sector in fewer than 5 years.
8. Sadly, this arguably represents THE largest system-level cost cutting/profit maximization tool over the last decade (i.e., reducing the ratios # of nurses who are paid more for PSWs who are paid less, not provided with proper training, protections or sufficient regulations).
9. THE RESULT: 58% of LTC employees are PSWs, followed by registered nurses (RNs) at 25%.

PS. It's also no coincidence the PSW workforce is largely female + racialized (where racism and sexism so painfully intersect).

Ok that's it for now my tweeple ❤️💪
