QUESTION: with distance learning, I don’t think we should ask students to be “on” for 6 hours a day. However, my students’ IEPs call for 360 minutes of daily instruction, as I imagine many others do across the country. Doing less than that would be a FAPE violation, but-
-then couldn’t the same argument be made for the appropriateness of virtual learning (outside of online schools of course)? How do we navigate addressing the legal and psychological needs of our sped population?
I imagine we could do new evaluations for all the students based on virtual learning environments and rewrite their IEPs entirely. But we only have so many school psychologists who can do those evals...basically SOMEthing(s) will need to change, I just don’t know what...
Found out today that we have hold IEP meetings for each of our students prior to September 21st. In this moment I feel:
- relieved that I only have 3 on my caseload so far
- grateful for the concrete communication
- anxiety about the time crunch
