Spending a couple of weeks in Switzerland this summer and I’m impressed by how well things “just work”
. A few thoughts on why that is: /1

Switzerland is run by a 7-person federal council representing the main conservative and liberal parties, ensuring continuity and compromise towards policies that benefit all /2
Strong devolved gov’ts allow the interests of communities to be served alongside those of the federation /3
0% private capital gains tax rate ensures steady investment in growth sectors of the economy /4
High residential property taxes (≈ tax on effective rental income) and rent controls encourage productive capital uses rather than real estate speculation, with low-yield resi RE investment done primarily by banks and pension funds /5
Strong multi-cultural fabric with 4 official languages + fluent English welcomes immigrants and expats /6
95%+ of energy generation stemming from hydro and nuclear sources ensures pollution levels are kept in check /7
True neutrality (vs opportunistic alliances) ensures Switzerland has trusting bilateral partnerships in an increasingly polarized world /8
More recently, immediate & firm lockdown actions followed by a broad opening of the economy with limited freedom restrictions have struck the right balance in response to Covid-19 /9
Culture for outdoors since youth leads to one of the lowest BMI and highest life expectancy levels in the developed world /10
