With Trump signing an Executive Order to ban twitter, we can't ignore the geopolitics of this. This also comes at a time when Microsoft is in talks to buy TikTok's operations in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand:

1. This is looking like the end of TikTok's global ambitions: banned in India (the worlds largest user market outside of China) and the US (the largest ad revenue market in the world). Caveat: We don't know how Trump/Biden will look at China post elections. (2/n)
2. Wasn't going to last: Major restrictions for foreign co's to play in China, but Chinese co's have a free run outside. Something was going to give, eventually, and it has. China-Tech is going to have a tough time in most countries.

3. Five Eyes: TikTok's US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand ops are being sold. With UK, these 5 are called Five Eyes, which share ๐๐ฃ๐ฉ๐๐ก๐ก๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ with each other. TikTok probably anticipates a ban in all these, but want a separate UK negotiation (more revenue). (4/n)
4. Control: Chinese govt, under law,can exert a lot of control over its co's, but democratic world has laws that restrict this. (Ps: India is going the China way here). If there aren't adequate protections and trust, bans will follow.

5. ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฎ ๐ฆ๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ถ๐ด๐ป๐๐: US-EU data sharing Privacy Shield has been struck down in EU + Microsoft says TikTok data of US citizens = stored in US. This boosts data localisation arguments. Means a splinternet.
For a global Internet, we need to rebuild trust. (6/n)

6. A thought experiment: Imagine TikTok as an Indian co challenging FB. Imagine India has a Personal Data Protection Law that allows unfettered govt access to data (thatโs the plan), and nationalises data, the way it is planning to, with NPD? How would the US react?

7. What we need: for a global Internet, is TRUST in cyberspace.
We need to address issues of jurisdiction & data sharing in case of crimes.
We need states to enable attribution in cyber attacks.
We need disarmament of cyber weapons.

This will be a long haul. Countries that play by common rules = global Internet.
Countries that dont, will find their co's & money rejected.
India needs to rework its policies (PDP Bill) to restrict govt access, else eventually join the rejects.
Junk its China envy.
