This letter from @pritipatel is bullshit. By mentioning the Dublin Regualtions (Dublin III reg) she admits she is referring to aslyum seekers, where we can send them back to an EU country. We’re abandoning this reg since we’ve left the EU. 1/8
In addition she may call them illegal crossings but it’s not illegal to cross the Channel. Now the tricky bit, are they illegal migrants or refugees? Illegal migrants are those who are refused asylum. 2/8
Out of the 1900 who crossed the Channel last year only 123 were sent back the rest were grated asylum ...hence now formerly refugees. 3/8
Refugees or those seeking refugee status DO NOT have to apply for aslyum in the first country of safety they enter and are protected from prosecution for illegal entry. In the UK this was recognised by Lord Justice Simon Brown. 4/8
In addition refugees are protected from prosecution under section 32 of the UN 1951 Refugees Convention. and put into UK Law - Asylum Act 1999 5/8
Now there are many other laws governing asylum seekers but they are governed by the ECHR and UN which we are still a part of and EU rules. As we left & the Dub Reg will soon not apply we can’t even send recognised refugees back to an EU country they came via. 6/8
Why is this important? Because Tories & @Nigel_Farage have been throwing around phrases like illegal immigrants etc purposely to inflame UK citizens without defining their true meaning and how migrants status is controlled. A small part is EU but mainly UN & ECHR 7/8
In short leaving the EU makes no change to non EU people entering the country and in fact may give rise an increase (which Farage is kingly proving) & to more people trafficking. 8/8
One more thing. @pritipatel letter shows a level of intolerance one would expect from a Nazi. It’s quite shocking that in this modern age we have a Home Secretary so full of hatred & bitterness towards other human beings. She is a bully @UKLabour @LibDems do better.
