If there can be an economic logic behind the support the allies of SLPP enjoys in the North, it is possible a similar logic was at work when Southern voters opted for the SLPP. Hence it's simplistic to reduce the SLPP's popularity in the South to racism& nationalist chauvinism.
The economic failures of the previous regime cannot be kept aside when analyzing why we fell into this mess.
But one thing is certain: Within a few months, when the country begins to feel the economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis, we will see SLPP failing its supporters in both the North and South on the economic front.
SLPP has created the myth that it can deliver economically. But that is not going to happen. When the economy faces a crisis and social unrest sets in in the South, the regime might resort to authoritarianism and accelerate its hate-mongering campaigns against minorities.
Difficult times ahead. With the SLPP enjoying a 2/3 majority, the key battles are going to be outside Parliament. We need to forge broad alliances cutting across ethnic divides to challenge this regime.
