What is the representation of women ♀️ in the body of work that influences worldwide #HeartFailure practice ?

Although >1 year from conception to publication, the findings we share in this new work, out now in @CircHF, are as important as ever

https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCHEARTFAILURE.119.006605

🧵 1/8:
2/8: What we know:

🔴 ♀️ are underrepresented in #cardiology

🔴 Publication authorship reflects this disparity

🔴 Despite increasing numbers of #WomenInMedicine, women cardiologists have
- 🔽 1st & last author 📄,
- 🔽 NIH 💰 , &
- 🔽 leadership positions

#ACCWIC #AHAWIC
3/8: Available benchmarking data from @AAMCtoday & others show us that % of women #HeartFailure trainees >> #SCAIWIN & #EPeeps

But, int'l survey data from @YasMoayedi @KiranKhush1 @JeffTeuteberg in @CircHF last year say sex-based imbalances still exist

https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/full/10.1161/CIRCHEARTFAILURE.118.005754
4/8: In this context, we wanted to examine how this relatively higher % of women in HF translates to the representation of women as leaders of & participants in #HeartFailure research

To do this, we analyzed @ACCinTouch @AHAScience @escardio Guidelines + contemporary HF trials
5/8: 🔑 findings of Guideline analysis:

▪️< 20% of 1st authors of pubs ref'd in @ACCinTouch @AHAScience @escardio Class I Recs are women

▪️ < 15% of senior authors of are women

▪️Proportions of women authors increased modestly from from 1986 to 2016

https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCHEARTFAILURE.119.006605
6/8: 🔑 findings of Clinical Trial (CT) analysis:

▪️Of 118 phase II–IV HF CTs, ~16%
had woman 1st or senior author

▪️Woman lead author associated with more total woman authors

▪️CTs with higher %s of
women authors tended to have higher enrollments
of female participants
7/8: Much more data on unique authors, publication counts per men and women authors, and clinical trial characteristics in the manuscript!

https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIRCHEARTFAILURE.119.006605
8/8: We hope our findings add support to the ongoing conversations about the many benefits of increasing #diversity, #equity, & #inclusion in cardiovascular medicine
