Lots of new/intermediate fighting game players seem to struggle when trying to figure how to play match ups.
So I thought about some basic questions to ask when trying to figure that out, and these can help for watching footage or commentary as well.

-Who is the aggressor/defender in the MU? Who has to approach
-Where should I be standing, and where does my opponent want to stand
-What am I looking for, what are my best ways to win in this MU
-Are there any particular tools that seem more/less effective

For each topic, you should also think about the opposite as well.
"Does my opponent seem uncomfortable at this range?" "What are the possible ways they can win a round/how do I make them work for it"

Just by asking those questions, you start to think about the match up.
Maybe every assumption you have is wrong, but that's totally fine if you're thinking about it. Eventually, you'll end up in the right place.
