Great! Let’s embrace the @WHO recommendations, including 2 yrs of #breastfeeding & the International Code of Marketing Breastmilk Substitutes - starting w the @AmerAcadPeds itself & its corporate donors that violate the #WHOCode. 1/n https://twitter.com/ameracadpeds/status/1289560281463414789
Let’s take a look. These companies supposedly “advance our mission for children”, & have undergone careful review. Yet they are some of the most egregious violators of the #WHOCode 2/n
How do we know this? There are @WHO resources on this very issue. 3/n https://www.who.int/news-room/events/detail/2020/05/28/default-calendar/online-launch-2020-status-report-on-the-national-implementation-of-the-code-of-marketing-of-breast-milk-substitutes
Financial sponsorship of health care organizations, HCWs & scientific meetings/events, are some of the oldest strategies used by BMS companies - indeed that is exactly how these companies got their start. Such sponsorship is a #COI for a child health organization. 4/
This #COI has seriously hinders efforts to address #breastfeeding #inequities. So how about for #WorldBreastfeedingWeek #NationalBreastfeedingMonth @AmerAcadPeds turns to action & follows @RCPCHtweets to drop BMS sponsorship? 5/n https://www.rcpch.ac.uk/news-events/news/rcpch-statement-relationship-formula-milk-companies
And, of course, there is a wealth of excellent literature on #COI that should be consulted. Starting w/ @prof_goldberg @MIALONMelissa @PhilBakerNZ and many others #CDoH
