I have heard the cries of Black students and been humbled...by the power of their truth. I have literally heard their cries. They have shed tears in my office, in class... I will never know the depth of their pain, but I will never stop fighting for them. https://www.sltrib.com/opinion/commentary/2020/08/09/jacob-s-rugh-an-open/
Again, this is not about dead White men. It is about centering on Black women and men who are alive, but not well. They are super-heroes, but not super-human: they cry, bleed, suffer, and die from racism. Their cries are heard by our Heavenly Parents. https://www.sltrib.com/opinion/commentary/2020/08/09/jacob-s-rugh-an-open/
I implore you to not ignore their cries, to not put off their demands for future study, to not back down as advocates for justice. Change begins now... As beloved American hero John Lewis asked, “If not us, who? If not now, then when?” https://www.sltrib.com/opinion/commentary/2020/08/09/jacob-s-rugh-an-open/
I credit most in my letter & thank @DebLexis, Don Izekor, @SoelbergGrace, @Kid_melodie, Kirstie Weyland, @OnlyKofiYouKnow, @Rachelw791, @tineshacapri, & 100+ Black students I've worked w/ & colleagues of color on BYU Committee on Race, Equity, & Belonging https://www.sltrib.com/opinion/commentary/2020/08/09/jacob-s-rugh-an-open/
I will have more to add later...
For now: racism is a sin, a moral issue, and a systemic problem at BYU, on campuses nationwide, and an enduring social fact of Anerican life that requires deliberate institutional action, resources, truth, & reconciliation.
