I knew the opioid crisis is real, and that it’s heightened during this pandemic. I had my first real experience last night when a man came in profusely sweating asking me to help him inject naloxone. He overdosed on heroin and the alcohol in his system heightens the effects.
I sat him in the counselling room and began prepping the injection. As I’m doing so and trying to stay calm, he started to sleep and I hear his breathing was extremely shallow. I called 911 after the first injection and kept trying to keep him awake.
Have him a second dose after 5 minutes and waited until paramedics came. He was taken out to the ambulance and seemed to be doing better after the second injection of naloxone. As they were taking him I ran after him to give him another naloxone kit. I knew he would OD again.
Lastly, I just want to let everyone know, if you/someone you know use opioids, PLEASE get a Naloxone kit and learn when and how to use it. He didn’t know how to use it and was lucky we were there to assist. You can get them free from any pharmacy. The government covers it.
