#bospoli Something didn’t sit right with me when I saw the BPS Family Reopening Survey Results disaggregated by race. I finally took a detailed look today and realized as many of you did that each vote was equally weighted. White respondents made up around 30% of the vote. 1/x
#bospoli If BPS were following their equity protocols, shouldn’t they have taken race into account when analyzing the survey results? Using a race-blind aggregate gives disproportionate influence to white respondents who voted substantially differently to families of color. 2/x
#bospoli If we weigh the results by race we see that votes for fully online learning and hybrid learning were very close. 3/x
#bospoli We saw something very similar on Wednesday when @BCassellius presented at the City Council hearing. @BostonSchools and Dr. Cassellius used the BPHC COVID data straight up to advocate for hopscotch. However, the BPHC data was for the whole city. 4/x
#bospoli We know Boston is not a monolith. When considering the public health of @BostonSchools, let’s face it, Beacon Hill and the Seaport COVID rates are not as important as Dorchester, Roxbury, or East Boston. Counselor @RicardoNArroyo pushed this analysis. 5/x
#bospoli Luckily the BPHC provides COVID data broken down by neighborhood. If we use math to weigh the COVID neighborhood data by the percentage of students each neighborhood sends to @BostonSchools, we get a positivity rate of around 4%. 6/x
#bospoli 4% puts Boston Public Schools with all the communities that @MassGovernor has declared red, or Highest Risk. @BostonSchools Data analysis is important. Data are not neutral. Please apply your own equity protocols and announce a remote start. 7/x
#bospoli Don’t use data if it doesn’t take race, equity, and our communities into account. Listen to your students, families, bus drivers, and @BTU66. Open #OnlyWhenItsSafe. /end
