I have a treat for my fellow history buffs. Who's familiar with George Washingtons Culper Spy Ring? Who watched "Turn: Washington's Spies"? People like Benjamin Tallmadge, Abraham Woodhull, Anna Strong, Caleb Brewster. I went on an adventure today in Setauket, NY. Let me show you
First up: The Grave of Abraham Woodhull
Here's the grave of Mary Woodhull, Abe's wife
Here's Abraham and Mary Woodhull right next to each other, in the Woodhull plot
Here's the Church/Cemetery where the Woodhull's are buried
Where Abraham Woodhull's house stood, right on the Setauket Harbor
Culper Spy Ring
Anna Strong's grave site - In a beautiful little cozy cemetery right on the Setauket harbor
Anna and her husband Selah
This is where Anna Strong is buried. . . The Strong's still live in Setauket and still use this little cemetery for family members
This is Caleb Brewster's house. Built in 1650. It still stands. Still looks great
Caleb Brewster and Benjamin Tallmadge are buried in Connecticut. Ben's house I believe is now where the elementary school now sits
These patriots were not celebrated in their time. no one knew what they did. These were George Washington's secret spies in British-controlled New York. No one even knew about them until the 1930's when documents were found - some 150 years later
The spies all went by numbers. They operated right under the noses of the British. The Woodhull's were even a loyalist family. They helped us win independence
Read Brian Kilmeade's book on this subject - "George Washngton's secret six"
So, what did you all think of my little history tour?
I'll be doing a few more of these. i'll share those as well when I do
Schools need to teach their local history. More people would have pride in where they come from
