/x Excerpts from the California Constitution of 1879, Section XIX. An entire section of the state's seminal governing document dedicated solely to denying and limiting the rights of people due to their race, ethnic origin & color of their skin. https://www.cpp.edu/~jlkorey/calcon1879.pdf https://twitter.com/TimothySandefur/status/1294703327486201856
/x NO WORDS HERE INTENDED TO OFFEND, DEMEAN OR DIMINISH ANYONE. Restatement is verbatim from the 1879 text, reproduced SOLELY to illustrate the profound and institutionalized racism toward Chinese and other Asians living in California, whether or not they were born in CA/USA.
/x "SEC. 2. No corporation now existing or hereafter formed under the laws of this State, shall, after the adoption of this Constitution, employ directly or indirectly, in any capacity, any Chinese or Mongolian...."
/x "SEC. 3. No Chinese shall be employed on any State, county, municipal, or other public work, except in punishment for crime."
/x From SEC. 4: "...The Legislature shall delegate all necessary power to the incorporated cities and towns of this State for the removal of Chinese without the limits of such cities and towns, or for their location within prescribed portions of those limits, and..."
/x "... it shall also provide the necessary legislation to prohibit the introduction into this State of Chinese after the adoption of this Constitution. This section shall be enforced by appropriate legislation." ALL OF THIS LANGUAGE WAS ENACTED IN THE CALIFORNIA CONSTITUTION.
/x Sadly, the fundamentally flawed & ideologically motivated "journalism and historical research" of @nhannahjones & the 1619 Project leads to the kinds of errors, omissions & conclusions that do precisely what she & her Project purport to address; deny & diminish due to race.
/x This same analysis & outcome is on the ballot in California this year with #Prop16. Repealing Prop 209 of 1996 will deny admission to CA's public universities to the most qualified & academically accomplished candidates, disproportionately harming Asian-American students.
/x Const. text Prop 16 repeals: "The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting."
/x But that the language of Prop 209 had been part of the original CA Constitution of 1879, as opposed to the odious, discriminatory language cited above. Which vision do we want for our state? For our children? For a more just society? Read for yourself and decide.
