So a right wing conspiracist/fake historian is saying, "Kamala Harris has a slaveowning ancestor, so she was never underprivileged! Dems, you support someone whose ancestor OWNED SLAVES!" But what US pol has ever been attacked for this? After Reconstruction, literally who?
(Actually, @castironwitch, would there be a way to find out if someone who was too rich/young/disabled to fight in the Civil War, so not prevented from officeholding during Reconstruction as a traitor, but WAS rejected by voters because their (grand)parents/sibs owned slaves?)
He's also trying to argue that she's not African-American because she's not descended from US slaves, but I am vaguely curious about how he thinks most Black Jamaicans' ancestors got to Jamaica and who those 200 people her slaveowning ancestor owned were?
Her family lore is that a free Black woman married a descendant of the slaveowner, rather than the slaveowner raping someone he enslaved (in HER tree branch). And also there was some free African immigration to Jamaica in the 1800s, so maaaybe none of her ancestors were enslaved.
This wouldn't make her neither Black nor African-American. The children of Black immigrants to the US are African-American, because that's how it works. Whether or not they'd be eligible for slavery reparations doesn't actually affect their position in US racial hierarchy
