After Sessions Sr went to work for Russia, his son began an odd odyssey, ending up as LONG-STANDING Repub Rep for Texas. Had to move, run multiple times to get the seat.

So my theory is:
Sessions Sr was Russian asset. Spent his entire time at FBI simply transferring information to Russian mob. Who knows why he did it?
But at the end of his tenure, he gave up all pretences, moved to RU and worked directly for them.

And lastly, the very odd and at times ridiculous Vendetta against the Clintons could simply be the Russian mob angry that their highest asset prior to trump was taken out.
