hisoka is a perfectly written character: a thread.
I read a character analysis on reddit so I decided to do the same with Hisoka, starting from his origins. If this is somehow interesting I will go on; if there are mistakes I’m sorry but english is my third language. I like to use capital letters when I write seriously, scary. 😐
One of the thing I like about him is the aura of mystery that sorrounds him. Honestly, regardless how curious I am to find something about his past, I think that it makes the character even more interesting +
and also that the decision to not dig up his past was made to let the character be what it is: mysterious and somehow charming.
In the canon we have just a glimpse of his possible past: we know he grew up in a state of poverty — he was so poor that even the humblest thing such as his favorite gum was for him a luxury and that’s why his ability is called bungeegum.
“To adore a piece of chewing gum so much that he would chew it long after the flavor faded simply to savor it a little longer tells us that Hisoka was perhaps, at one point, an innocent child.”
Being in a state of poverty means that he faced death and crime since he was just a child and it is explained even more in Ishida’s one-shot manga (Togashi approved).
Even the manga is still vague and mysterious, we don’t get to know EVERYTHING about his past but it’s useful to understand what kind of environment he grew up in.
Hisoka is stood as a prodigy since he was born. We get to know that his mom taught him illusionistic and magic arts — but he was already really powerful and talented, which made everyone around him hate him more.
He was able, since he was born, to see everyone’s aura and to understand everyone’s nen ability. He was also able to learn things in a short amount of time, which made him capable of copying and using big magicians’ tricks.
Regardless his intentions, he grew up being hated by other people for being extremely smart and skilled. What he ended up being doesn’t really depend by his original intentions.
He found himself alone, wrapped in the ambitions of murderous and skilled combatants, so he had no choice but to defend himself, kill and walk away.
He’s used to kill since he was a little boy so when he finds himself in front of powerful enemies he feels extremely excited and aroused.
I don’t think we can talk about pedophilia and I’ll explain why: what makes Hisoka aroused is the fact that he finally have found a enemy worth to die for, sooner or later: Gon. He loves power regardless age, gender, past. Nothing matters to him as long as the enemy is strong.
When he talks about waiting for the fruit to be ripe it’s not meant in a strictly sexual way — even if his lust and desire to kill makes him sexually aroused too. He’s just waiting for Gon to be more and more powerful cause he saw the potential in him since the beginning.
It’s kind of okay if he sounds creepy cause honestly his character was made to be creepy and strange. We are not here to say he’s a hero; he’s definitely psycho and sociopath, things that starts becoming even worse after his fight with Chrollo.
His character has always been extremely important for the story development — just think about the fact that during the Hunter exam he gave back Gon his card (#44): in that way he gave him the inspiration to learn and do more (thing that happens during the Heaven Arena’s arc) +
since Gon was now in debt. Hisoka perfectly knows how powerful Gon can be.
Since I’m addressing the p3do situation I will explain also the scene where Hisoka is staring at Killua and Gon’s back: it was purposely made as a (tacky) comic gag.
Hisoka needed to talk with the person in front of the boys to ask something (I don’t remember right know lol), but moving on his own would have seen as something really suspicious and just as Bisky said, Hisoka had a plan nobody knew anything about +
(the plan was to find the specialist that could remove Kurapika’s nen from Chrollo — but Hisoka told Gon, Killua and everyone else that he was on Greed Island just cause he was extremely bored and wanted to play).
Making Gon and Killua uncomfortable was the only way to move in the front without being asked anything. The scene is creepy, I’m not saying otherwise and it’s easy to misunderstand or still believe he’s just a p3do. I’m giving my honest point of view — I’m not mentally ill +
and I would never support in any way a p3do character. I think it’s kind of obvious.
It’s important to remember that the two boys are really smart and would have found out soon what Hisoka was planning, if he started asking questions around (since Hisoka does everything on his own and out of the blue.)
I have a lot of things to say about him but for today I’ll stop here. This is my opinion and personal analysis and besides all the jokes I make about him, I truly love this character and I‘m convinced he’s one of the most well written “villains”.
