Story time: I was in a local fb group campaigning for the @SaveUoPLit petition, as you do, and I was hit with all the 'English Lit is useless' 'do a real subject' 'science will save the world' yada yada. (1/5)
So I shared events UoP Lit staff ran, the skills they taught, the work they did for the community, etc. But here's the thing: I structured all of these points like a Lit essay. I found evidence, communicated my points clearly, created an argument which was easy to follow. (2/5)
Most importantly, I connected all the evidence to the conclusion that the department deserved to be saved, just
like
an
essay
. I didn't even realise I was doing it, because it's so innate to me after studying Lit. (3/5)

I've been trained by all of these amazing people to do exactly that: make a strong argument, communicate it well, and be convincing. In this fb group I got so many compliments on the way I wrote from the people who were arguing AGAINST Lit being worthwhile. (4/5)
Moral of the story: people can see the value of English Lit studies and they can appreciate the skills that English Lit teaches - they just don't want to acknowledge it. (5/5)
