THIS explains a lot. But to understand, you need to know about BTEC marking. So... THREAD ⬇️
1. BTECs are made up of individual units. Some are internally assessed. Some (40% in the case of the course teach) are externally assessed (so basically exams)
2. @PearsonEdexcel has 1/6
said that only 0.5% of BTEC grades were downgraded. However, BTEC teachers were not asked for CAGs, just to submit unit grades. These were largely untouched.
3. @PearsonEdexcel said that they would use these unit grades to calculate likely grades for the cancelled exams. 2/6
4. What I expected was that @PearsonEdexcel would look at the submitted grades and calculate the missing exam grades based on what students were likely to have achieved, given the standard of their work so far. Remember, these unit grades were moderated by @PearsonEdexcel 3/6
5. What actually happened was that students were subject to the same (or similar) process as A Level students. FIRST their overall grade was predicted, based on centre prior attainment. THEN points for already achieved units were deducted. THEN exam grades were “calculated” 4/6
by dividing the number of remaining points by the number of external units (see image)
6. This explains WHY students who got nothing but distinction and merit grades for two years got pass grades for exams they were not allowed to take.
7. This is discrimination and needs to 5/6
be addressed. @PearsonEdexcel have claimed that they have not downgraded BTEC students but the system for allocating grades for cancelled external assessments means that students HAVE been downgraded. @ofqual @bbceducation @GavinWilliamson @SchoolsWeek @miss_mcinerney
