/6 Street demonstrations across the country marking the first anniversary of #Sudan’s 17 August Constitutional Declaration took a violent turn in #Khartoum with batons and tear gas levelled at Sudanese calling for their government to press forward with key transitional reforms.
/6 Demonstrations are a warning to the government and the #friendsofsudan supporting the transition. The government, whose response to the demos has been disappointing, should listen to and communicate clearly and honestly with Sudanese on the struggles facing the transition.
/6 Demonstrators' demands include increased security, establishing a legislative council, dismantling former govt officials’ influence on the economy and institutions, better services, and reforms in the justice and security sectors.
/6 #Hamdok should spend his strong yet slowly diminishing political capital on driving progress and reforms on these key issues, among others.
/6 Sudanese people’s commitment to nonviolence during demonstrations and sit-ins while demanding progress on securing basic rights and security has been powerful. As a result, they have maintained the moral high ground and confounded any pretexts for a militarised response.
/6 Sudan’s transition remains a phenomenal and singular opportunity for the country and its people to fulfil the revolution’s demands for freedom, peace and justice.
