Kids, I'm gonna tell you an incredible story

The story of how I met my money

You: Are we being punished for something?

No.

You: Yeah, is this gonna take a while?

Yes.

đź’Ą How I Met My Money Thread đź’Ą
20 years ago, before I was dad,
I had this whole other life.

It was 1998, I was fresh out of high school

And going off to college to move away from my parents

I did the standard college thing

Lived in the dorm, got a meal plan, made some new friends

I was living the life
Everyone always told me...

“In college you should find yourself”

“Have fun”

“You have your whole life to work”

“Enjoy the college experience”

So I did
Too much

I had so much fun that I lost my scholarships and had to take out student loans to pay for school

I didn’t have to pay them right away so I didn’t think anything of it

I messed around in school for a while but I eventually graduated and I became a teacher
This is about when things really changed

Now I’m strapped with all this student loan debt...

But

I was a big boy now with a big boy job and an amazing girlfriend so I decided to buy a house
I’ve got a job

I’ve got student loan debt

I’ve got a mortgage

I know!!!!!

Boom engaged
Now after an amazing wedding

And two wonderful kids

I take a look at my life and

My financial situation is BAD

So what do you do when you get in that spot?

You do something about it
We sold the house

Paid of the student loan debt

Paid off the cars

We rented a small apartment

Me needed drastic results so we took drastic action
Now

For the first time in my adult life

I’m debt free

And it feels amazing

I’m making more than I’m spending

We have some money invested

And things are looking up
At 40 years old I’m finally in a place financially where I feel like I have some options.

Now kids

You’re probably seeing this as a story of redemption

And in a way it is

But I see this as a warning

Don’t wait until you’re 40 to start putting your life together

Do it now!
