I first interviewed Dale Hawerchuk during the OHL playoffs while working in North Bay, ON. Told me “if you want a pregame interview meet when I get off the bus.” So the next game I did just that. He smirked and said “alright let’s do this” and gave a great interview from what I remember. In that moment he showed accountability being a man of his word.
Later on we shared a quick conversation at a hotel continental breakfast in Ottawa, where the lacrosse team I helped coach and his Colts were staying. I don’t think he remembered me, be we chatted like any hotel guests lining up for food would do.
He didn’t see himself as the hockey legend he was. Just the coach of a Jr. hockey team on the road, waiting for his turn to grab a cup of coffee.
Talking to people in Winnipeg about his legacy today, you quickly realize this is who he was, a humble hockey hero. And that’s how he’ll be remembered. #RemeberingDucky #HawerchukStrong
