Why not both? Why not hold Criterion accountable in their efforts to make the collection more inclusive for BIPOC filmmakers and support their efforts to do so, while ALSO forgoing any notion that the CC is the be-all-end-all of boutique home video curation? Why not support:
Kino Lorber’s incredible collection. https://www.kinolorber.com/shop
The great work at Cohen Media (their website shop wasn’t working so here’s a list of their films at Barnes & Noble) https://m.barnesandnoble.com/b/cohen-media-collection/_/N-2cpv?sk_page=dept
The ongoing excellent work at Flicker Alley. https://www.flickeralley.com
The always great Shout/Scream Factory folks. https://www.shoutfactory.com
Arrow video’s great collection. https://www.arrowvideo.com
Good old Vinegar Syndrome for the horror, the cult, the raunch and more! https://vinegarsyndrome.com
Anyway, point is, CC has its problems and as a fan of the brand, I sincerely hope they do better. But all of these other great resources and some that I’m sure I’ve missed (and RIP Twilight Time btw) are also doing incredible work that deserves your attention.
Don’t ever consider CC to be the first, last and only name in your gateways to cinema.
