Some perspective: It costs nearly $2,000 to outfit a journalist with safety gear alone. This doesn't include the costs of photo equipment and transportation. Yesterday we had 4 staff photographers in the fire zone and even more reporters. It's expensive to cover the news.
Covering the news is expensive in more ways than just money. It's stressful & too often dangerous work. These fires come on top 5 nonstop months of covering a deadly pandemic. But when there is breaking news journalists are driven to get lifesaving information to readers 24/7.
