Fuck it! Building mantels TODAY
This is the most formal mantel. It surrounds the chimney on three sides with moldings wrapping around four identical pilasters
Winter is like 5 months long here. Gets below freezing and stays there more or less in November. January and February can see weeks below zero. All houses have to deal with WINTER. If you have the money you throw systems at it
Elaborate heating systems, generators capable of running the whole house... Below zero puts these systems to the test and when they fail they fail castrophically. The old way was different
In the oldest houses you built an enormous chimney, built the house around it. Giant kitchen fireplaces that you could step into, small parlor fireplaces designed to throw heat into the room. This was the technology.
You would heat the mass of brick and stone. The brick would be warm to the touch on the second floor. You’d keep your body as close to that mass as possible. Go to bed early with other warm bodies, wake with the weak sun and keep yourself busy.
Do you even read theory dude?
Customer wants fluted pilasters so have to redesign. Should be fun
Going to try to make something similar to this. I need to transfer the proportions, it’s where the magic is. Asher Benjamin doesn’t give measurements but PARTS. You divide your actual space into parts and follow his math
Laying out flutes. Use the actual tool for layout whenever possible
Gonna do this
It’s like America’s Test Kitchen in here. Trying to come up with a way to make these flutes and keep them crisp. Failing. Trying so many combinations of tools
Trying to fight changing grain. Trying to let the tools do the work
