Anyone else reading @schmangee’s book? Read the first chapter, hopefully will finish the rest in a week or two. #ralpol
Yes! Speed is critical to safety. 45 mph arterials (with traffic going 50+) are deadly by design. Speed is also a huge factor in comfort/getting more ppl to walk. No one wants to walk next to fast moving vehicles, people intuitively know it’s unsafe.
This is how Patrick Nixon was killed earlier this year on Gorman https://twitter.com/_jcaruso/status/1255579963509608448
More Americans are buying larger and larger vehicles, and are killing their kids with them... These injuries/deaths are largely not included in official traffic deaths, bc they aren’t on roadways.
In addition to more gasoline usage and pollution... SUVs have also been shown (in multiple studies) to be more deadly to pedestrians.
(No serious regulation is in place/proposed to regulate the front end of vehicles that are known to be more dangerous)

We should build safe infrastructure where we want people to be, not just where they are today. Like the old adage, “you don’t build a bridge based on how many people swim across the river”.
Finished the book. Overall it was really good. Very approachable and does a good job laying out what the issues are (with multiple illustrative stories), their (multiple) causes, and what can be done about it.
