Wei Ying is rummaging around the kitchen looking for a snack when he hears the door open and the tell-tale sounds of Lan Zhan and A-Yuan returning home. It was his husband’s turn to pick up A-Yuan from kindergarten today. https://twitter.com/yllzsexc/status/1301172115635281921
“BABA!! ” A-Yuan shouts and Wei Ying winces slightly at his loud voice but he’s curious as to what he sounds so excited about today.
“In the kitchen,” he calls out and then waits as the pattering of socked feet come running, (which was also a ‘no-no’ inside the house, but he lets it slide, for now).
His son comes into the kitchen with the biggest smile on his face and his little backpack thump-thumping against his back, Wei Ying instantly crouches down so A-Yuan can run into his waiting arms.
“There’s my favourite little radish, how was your day at school baby?” He asks, placing a wet kiss to A-Yuans cheek that makes him screw up his face adorably and rub it off. But he wisely stays quiet because he knows––from experience––that there will be more if he complains
“I have surprise!”

Wei Ying raises his eyes at that and looks at Lan Zhan who has come to stand in the doorway, asking for any clue on what this so-called surprise was.

Lan Zhan gives him a look that just tells him he doesn’t know what their son is talking about either.
There's a tug on his arm and A-Yuan is pulling him towards the living room while jumping excitedly, “first we sit!”

He leads both of his fathers by the hands to the sofa and pats it expectantly, telling them to sit down.
Wei Ying glances curiously at his husband who is looking quietly amused.

They sit down and when nothing happens for the next few seconds Wei Ying looks at A-Yuan expectantly, “well?”
“Eyes closed first,” pouts A-Yuan as if it was obvious.

Lan Zhan nods from beside him. “Of course,” he says, completely serious and does as he's told.
The things he does for this boy. Wei Ying closes his eyes and hopes to god this won't be another ‘surprise’ like last time. He has no idea who taught his son how to make mud pies (although a certain Lan Jingyi comes to mind), but it was a pain to clean out of the white rug.
A-Yuan brings his and Lan Zhan’s hands together and thankfully whatever is placed in them is not soft and dirt-like but blessedly normal feeling, such as paper.

“Okay, open nnnnnnow!’
Wei Ying has no idea what he's looking at. “Oh A-Yuan, it's lovely!” He says anyway because he is a Good Parent.

Lan Zhan turns the paper? Card? Around and oh now he can read it. The letters are traced, of course, and hard to read
(although for a 4-year-old their A-Yuan had pretty good handwriting if you asked him, and no he was not biased), and there are about five different handprints in varying colors and butterflies drawn everywhere but Wei Ying is finally able to read it.
‘Happy fathers day!’ it says in wobbly writing and oh.

Oh right. It was father's day then? Today? And they were fathers weren’t they, so of course, A-Yuan would've made them a card at school, it was a normal thing for young kids to do. But then why is he feeling so teary-eyed?
He feels Lan Zhan place a gentle hand on his thigh, warm and comforting.

“You don't open it?”
“We will open it now,” assures his husband and oh damn, Wei Ying is really gonna cry now. Because inside is a simple drawing of the three of them (with labels he notes through blurry eyes, even though the red and the blue crayons would have been a clear enough indicator).
Lan Zhan speaks first. “Thank you A-Yuan, it's wonderful,” he brings him closer and kisses the top of his head. “Did you make it yourself?”

But A-Yuan doesn’t answer because he’s looking at his other father worriedly. “Baba are you sad?”
And no that won't do at all so Wei Ying tries to wipe his tears as discreetly as possible and pulls A-Yuan up to sit between them. “No A-Yuan baba is not sad, baba is very happy, so happy. We love your card don’t we Lan Zhan?”
“We do,” Wei Ying notices that Lan Zhan's eyes also look a bit wet, so at least he's not the only cry-baby in this relationship.
He peppers A-Yuan's face with kisses to prove his point. “You’re so talented, sweetheart! As expected of course, isn’t it Lan Zhan?” He pinches two chubby cheeks affectionately, “next Picasso for sure!”

“Wawa hwuts,” says A-Yuan through his stretched cheeks.
He lets go in favour of holding up the card proudly, “I'm gonna show this to all the other uni staff and they’ll die of jealously.”

“Wei Ying,” his husband admonishes gently, but he also doesn’t say no, so.
“Shh darling, let me have this. First thing we’re gonna do is ‘accidentally’ drop it in front of that librarian who's always hitting on you. What was his name? Su… Su something?”
Wei Ying doesn't have to be looking at Lan Zhan to know he’s smiling. “I don't know who you’re referring to,” he says, knowing exactly who Wei Ying is referring to.

“Oh Lan Zhan I want to frame this, ah but then we can’t put it on the fridge. Hmm, should we make a copy or two?”
“Fridge!” Answers A-Yuan for him, taking the card and running into the kitchen as fast as his little legs can take him. Lan Zhan follows behind, probably to make sure he can even reach the top part of the fridge in the first place.
He hesitates for a second when Wei Ying doesn’t make a move to follow them but Wei Ying just waves him away.

“I’m coming, I'm coming, just give me a second,” it's definitely not because he needs to cry a tiny bit.
After he has finished not-crying, he composes himself and joins his family in the kitchen. Wei Ying can hear A-Yuan babbling away about how Jingyi finished all the glitter so he couldn’t put any on his card while Lan Zhan is making tiny humming noises to show he’s listening.
Wei Ying comes behind him to hook his chin on his shoulder and wrap his arms around his husband's waist.

“How does it look?” Lan Zhan asks, leaning into him
Wei Ying takes in the animal-shaped magnets holding up the various other drawings they’ve accumulated since A-Yuan started kindergarten with the card placed right in the centre and smiles.
“It looks perfect.”
