My fav episode of DP is: DP66. Imo, this episode perfectly encapsulates everything the series is setting up for: Dawn regaining her confidence & Ash and Paulâs rivalry as a whole. Everything links up well together in this ep.
My fav episode of DP is: DP66. Imo, this episode perfectly encapsulates everything the series is setting up for: Dawn regaining her confidence & Ash and Paulâs rivalry as a whole. Everything links up well together in this ep.
One of the best aspects of this ep, is that despite Paul only being in a flashback, heâs still pretty important plot-wise. The gang finds out that Paulâs already battled Maylene but Maylene lost brutally to him and was told that she was the weakest gym leader Paul ever battled.
Due to this, Maylene started to doubt her skills and was skeptical if she was fit to be a gym leader or not. Dawn related heavily. By this point in the series, Dawn had lost 2 contests in a row, and also had begun to doubt herself as a potential good coordinator. Once she found..
someone she could relate to, she took advantage of the opportunity. and had a really great conversation with Maylene, sharing their insecurities and doubts. The scene also does a great job of showing that despite their different interests (gym leader and coordinator), itâs...
..irrelevant bc insecurities are subjects that everyone can relate to. As I mentioned before, Paul is heavily linked in this ep. Itâs because that Maylene lost to Paul so brutally that she started questioning herself and itâs because of this that Dawn could perfectly understand..
what Maylene was going through and what she was feeling at the moment. Eventually Dawn offered to battle Maylene, serving as a clever way to instill confidence in both Maylene AND Dawn herself. Dawn had already decided that she was taking a break from contests, so trying...
..something new such as battling a gym leader would not only allow her to experience something new for herself, but also divert her mind a bit. Ofc Dawn lost the battle (in the next ep), but the battle helped to restore her self-esteem a bit, as it did with Maylene.
Paul is also indirectly linked to this portion. The gang met Reggie, Paulâs older bro. While Ash and Brock were talking, Reggie noticed Chimchar, the very same mon that once belonged to Paul, now in Ashâs possession; the very same one that Paul abandoned for being too weak.
By this point in time, Ash knew that Paul didnât give a shit about bonding with your Pokemon; all Paul cared about was strength and raw power. If a mon wasnât strong enough based on power alone, it was good riddance for that mon.
This went against Ashâs values; Ash believes that any mon can become strong if given proper love, training and effort. Despite that, he was always losing to Paul and by his dedication to defeating Paul one day, he wanted to prove that HIS ideologies and training methods also work
(he eventually does so at the Sinnoh league) Reggie noticed the difference in perspectives and suggested another battle between them, foreshadowing the full battle the two would have at Lake Acuity later in the series, a really important battle for Ashâs development in DP.
Finally, the last bit being foreshadowed is actually linked to Paul as well! Reggieâs missing a frontier badge. Just like Brock questioned Reggie here, Brock will question Paul about this later in the series, which will further emphasize Paul & Reggie's relationship, why he...
doesn't want to be like Reggie and it would also eventually lead up to Paul challenging Brandon. It also indirectly points to Ash and Paul's relationship. In a later ep, Paul mentions that Ash reminds him of Reggie. They both believe in friendship, trust, bonds, things Paul hate.
So yeah, DP66 does a lot of things right without being direct. I love subtle moments foreshadowing upcoming events. This ep does it all with Dawn regaining her confidence, hinting at Ash and Paul's future battle, and emphasizing their rivalry, in just under 20 mins.
Ofc I do think other episodes are better, but this one is just my personal preference because of how everything works really well together and how everything is set up.
