It’s World Suicide Prevention Day and I want to talk about something that’s been in the news recently.

Many of you will have seen the horrific reports that a video of someone taking their own life has been circulating on on social media. Versions of the video have been designed specifically to target young people and lure them into watching it.
We know that social media has so much potential to do so much harm. We saw that in horrifying clarity during the Christchurch massacre.
After Christchurch, laws were passed to remove “abhorrent violent content” from social media – but now we’ve learned the Government can’t force the removal of videos like this one.
Why? Because videos of suicide don’t fit the legal definition of “abhorrent violent content”.

We’ve also heard this week that the eSafety Commissioner – the person charged with online safety – doesn’t have the resources she needs to do her job.
We’ve got to do better than this.
This isn’t about politics. We will work with the Government to fix this problem – because we’ve got to keep our kids safe.
