I just finished watching Cuties and wow...it was a tough film to watch. It was weird, disturbing, uncomfortable, and down right gross in certain parts. I think that makes the film important.
I think everyone has every right to be angry with the film. But we can’t only be angry with the film. We need to be angry at other outlets that inspire such a film to be made.
It would be foolish to believe this film was made out of thin air. We have dance competitions, cheer competitions, and pageants that have been going on for centuries encouraging small children-particularly you girls- to dress and dance proactively.
We have TV shows dedicated to depicting young girls in this way. From Dance Moms to Cheer to Toddlers & Tiaras.
I admit I’m confused...there are several discussions about what is & isn’t appropriate clothing for young girls to wear. W/images of toddlers wearing a crop top and short - half the argument is that she’s dressed inappropriately & the other half is to stop sexualizing a toddler.
I would also like to mention how the music industry recruits young preteens and grooms them to become sex symbols by the time they reach age 16. We love the music, the merch, and the concerts, but if we actually put some thought into their ages...we should be worried.
I think the movie is doing exactly what it needs to do which is make everyone angry. We should be angry about this. We can’t act like this is not a reality. And truth be told, there are a lot of parent oblivious of the sexual exposure their kids experience.
We should be mad at apps like tik tok for not properly regulating their app. There are many children who are literally 12 but dress like their 19 and wear make up and nails. They look older than their age. And say and do inappropriately things on that app.
People are demanding the film could’ve been a documentary or used older actresses. But I don’t believe we would be this mad about this issue if it was made in those ways. I believe a narrative fiction film was made to show the absurdity of the hyper sexuality of our society.
Demanding that Cuties be made differently so you can feel better while watching a film about children’s exposure to sexual expression weird. We should never feel comfortable talking about sexualizing children. Or watching anything related to it.
But I will admit, that movie had some ROUGH SCENES. Like...whew it was the definition of inappropriate and just downright aweful to look at. But there are kids doing that stuff on tik tok right now...where the outrage towards tik tok? Where’s the cancel tik tok campaign?
