Platitudes are great and I know they can make a difference in people's lives. But "awareness" and "prevention" days and months can only make so much of a difference. #WSPD2020

When people can't get mental health care in their community - it's too expensive, the waiting lists are too long - the impact can be huge. #WSPD2020

Preventing suicide in our communities is not JUST saying "not today", or "this will end". It's about investing in accessible resources so that mental illness doesn't come to crisis as often as it does. #WSPD2020

This release from 2018 says that "up to 80 per cent of Canadians rely on their family physicians to meet their mental health care needs," which is a result of under-funding low-cost community services and an over-reliance on psychiatrists and hospitals. https://cmha.ca/ending-health-care-disparity-canada
I have a great family physician. When I have a cold/strep/whatever, I pay $0 to see her. If I have to, I can visit a walk-in clinic. No extended benefits necessary. Why is mental health care so different? #WSPD2020

We know beyond all doubts that mental health and physical health are intertwined. It's about time that we took World Suicide Prevention Day #WSPD2020
and turned it in to actions beyond 'ask your friends how they REALLY are'.

People shouldn't need to share their trauma for you to recognize that there is a need for better mental health care in Canada. We can all ask for better. #BellLetsTalk #WSPD2020

(One last tweet just to say that poverty, disability, racism, anti-2SLGBTQ+discrimination, and climate change also affect mental health. We won't make a lot of progress on mental health issues in this country unless we tackle these & other social injustices.) #WSPD2020
