On 9/11, my mother, who observes hijab, picked me up from school. A driver cut us off and yelled "f**k you Muslims."

Next day, walking home from school, a man pointed his gun out the window of his house and yelled "keep walking before I shoot you Muslim kids."

I was 11yrs old. https://twitter.com/paulkrugman/status/1304385740063805440
At age 16, walking through a festival with family members, a group of 20yr olds circled us and yelled "f**k middle eastern oil, we want British petroleum."

Flung their cigarettes at us while the rest of the crowd watched.
At age 20, while in graduate school, sitting down for my first exam and a classmate looked at me and said "did you know your Prophet slaughtered millions of people to start his religion?".

A classmate that overheard said "yeah, I learned that as well."
Age 21, hanging with a group of "friends", I spoke to how difficult travel is for Muslims with the extra scrutiny at the airport.

A white woman responded by saying "you being pulled out of line and scrutinized is for all our safety and I support it."
Age 26, as a State Rep in MI, a "colleague" sent out an email asking for co-sponsorships on a bill to ban Sharia law in MI.

Another colleague asked me my "Muslim men beat their wives."

And another asked a friend of mine "don't you believe Muslims are trying to take over?"
Muslims Americans and anyone thought to be Muslim were quickly viewed as the "enemies".

Hate crimes skyrocketed.

We were asked to condemn everything and then told "you're not condemning it loud enough."

No "leader" spoke up bc it wasn't politically expedient to do so.
This sentiment was among all - Democrats, Republicans and everything in between.

Canvassing in 2016, a neighbor just a block away, a 90+ dem score, told me he's "disgusted" that I lived near him.

And another told me "f***k off my front porch, I don't vote Islamic."
