The argument that Cuties is a criticism of child sexualisation fails to grasp the distinction between a thing and a simulation.
Simulation as criticism works with a film about racist violence because what we are seeing is not real. It would not work if you actually paid a group of skinheads to batter a Jewish man to a pulp.
Simulation as criticism doesn't make your audience complicit in the creation and distribution of the criticised material.
Actually creating sexualised material of children - shot after shot, retake after retake - does. It shouldn't have been made and it shouldn't be distributed.
The inability to distinguish the two is depressing but not unexpected.
