the “violent” vs “nonviolent offender” dichotomy is a pretty frustrating liberal tic and no one serious about meaningfully reducing our prison population and bringing it in line with the rest of the world thinks we can come close to doing this with just “nonviolent offenders”
When adding up the aggregate total number of years people are incarcerated the vast, vast majority are for violent offenses. It’s messy! It’s hard! But we have to talk about what to do with these people and prevent these crimes if were gonna do more than pick around the margins
If one doesn’t actually want to get the US’s prison population in line w/ the rest of the world (already a compromise) thats fine, be honest. But one cannot seriously make the US’s prison population on moral par w/o radically reducing the number of incarcerated violent offenders
It’s just math
