A theology of the cross understands that the Christian life is patterned after the life of our Lord: it is suffering now, glory later. If you're suffering, don't assume that God has abandoned you. In fact, God’s power is made manifest in our suffering and weakness.
As the Lord said to Paul, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor. 12.9). If you are discouraged and facing fearful circumstances, do not conclude that God is not blessing you. Do not think that God’s mission has failed.
In our suffering, God is operating in his standard way. He has supplied you with his Spirit who equips you with all you need as he conforms you more to the image of Christ.
First comes suffering, then comes glory. That was the pattern of our Lord’s life, and it will be the pattern of ours. It is THROUGH our suffering for the gospel, through suffering the ridicule of the world, through hardships and difficulties that God is fulfilling his purpose.
