Laremy Tunsil - Worth every penny and pick. It was night & day watching Frank Clark against Tunsil and Tytus Howard.

Clark worked Howard all night and Tunsil returned the favor by working Clark in each matchup.

The only struggles that Tunsil saw were on mixups from stunts
Speaking of Tytus

I was a huge advocate of his pre-draft. He showed well last year before his injury.

On Thursday, I didn't recognize the guy playing RT for the Texans

It was not the same guy. Houston brought him back last year from a torn MCL before shutting him down for good
Howard's kick was slow, his balance was off, he was dropping his head, bending at the waist, stopping on plays

I don't know if it was the lack of the preseason, working the rust off from injury or what, but he struggled
Zach Fulton, like most of the line, struggled with the strength of Chris Jones.

Jones routinely tossed Fulton, among others.

What Fulton lacked in pass pro, he makes up for in the run game

He was a mauler on pulls, 2nd level, everything.
Nick Martin was adequate. He needs to sustain his blocks. Allowing to many defenders to shed and disrupt the play or end it
Max Scharping has been so much better than I could have imagined

Max doesn't look like a 2nd year player as his kicked off the sophomore campaign
Deshaun Watson is no longer that young, developmental QB, in his first 3 years

He's seen as the 2nd highest paid player in the NFL

He has to shed the"off games". Watson had 2 games of 160 passing yards or less w/ 0 TDs in the first 4 games last season
Watson had only thrown for 139 yards on 12/20 passing when he threw the INT in the 4th

KC went up 31-7 and let off the gas. After that, Houston inflated their numbers as Watson went on to go 8/12 for 114 yds with a rush and passing TD in garbage time
Lets talk Watson's receivers

DeAndre Hopkins averaged over 9 TDs a year over his last 5 seasons (including 3 seasons with 11+)

Houston's current Top 3 receivers have struggled to consistently find the end zone
Cobb has a TD rec in 6 of his last 39 regular season games

Fuller has a TD rec in 2 of his last 16 games

Cooks has a TD rec in 3 of his last 22 games
Speaking of Cooks

50+ rec yards in a game
(1 time in last 11 reg sea gm)

100+ rec yards in a game
(1 time in last 20 reg sea gm)
On the Watson INT Fells cant let Mathieu long arm him like a pass rusher and the grip and rip him to get to the QB

Mathieu was shown on the sideline laughing with teammates & demonstrating the move that he pulled on the 6'7 - 280 pound TE

Watson still can't throw that ball, tho
David Johnson looked great throughout the game

David had a great lead block out of 20 personnel ahead of Duke

Caught well, ran well. The point of the offense that was as advertise. Best RB in Houston since Arian Foster. Has to stay healthy, obviously
JJ Watt at nose tackle --

I love the move and would play him more there

Quickest way from point A to point B? He's too quick thru the A gap for interior linemen and disrupts play

Watt is also best on the backside of the play, which he'll find himself in often at NT
Watt also freelances and will dive deep inside or run wide outside, leaving huge gaps in his side of the defensive line, that RBs & mobile QBs routinely attack

At NT, it limits this as he's covered on each side and by high-paid LBs behind him, so he's not giving up contain
Brandon Dunn
PJ Hall
Ross Blacklock

The rookie Blacklock didn't get a lot of run but when he was in there, he showed that he's stout and quick but the Texans are wisely ramping up his workload as he isn't "there" yet

Dunn takes on double teams w/o giving up an inch but...
Dunn doesn't have the needed agility to shed blocks and make the play, consistently, as he did on the goal line

Hall looks to have been a great pickup for O'Brien. He doesn't have the stoutness of Dunn but has the needed agility to shed and make plays at the line and behind
Whitney Mercilus...umm, I don't know how to put this nicely but he was a complete non-factor

His strength is setting the edge & even at that he failed as him and Cunningham both allowed Edwards-Helaire thru their arms
Speaking of guys who have been given big money by the Texans recently, that were travesties on the field, add McKinney in with Mercilus & Cunningham

Zach & Benardrick might be the highest paid ILB duo in the NFL but they'll also probably lead the league in missed tackles
Cunningham consistently took poor angles to the ball, running inside of the blocker and giving up contain that would lead to 10+ yards, additionally to where the tackle should have been made
Bradley Roby doubled down on mistakes to ensure a Chiefs TD

Roby was flagged for PI in the end zone, on a 4th down play that was picked off by McKinney

Texans held KC to a 3rd and goal before Roby gives up the TD to Tyreek
AJ Moore was a guy who flashed last year for the Texans

In the Chiefs game, he took great angles to the ball and may be the Texans answer vs receiving RBs that have plagued them for years
Moore gives the Texans secondary added layers as they showed versatility with many different looks in nickel, dime and quarters

Whether it was the rust or not, Justin Reid looked like a box safety against the Chiefs

Twisted up in coverage by Kelce, left by Demarcus, etc
Lastly, it's an unusual season and teams didn't have a preseason

Some rough play should be expected, but my issue is with how well the Chiefs executed in everything that they wanted to do

While Houston, struggled in every phase except their offensive running game
Lets say the Texans offense wasn't clicking because of the lack of preseason, "new OC", new pieces in David Johnson, Cooks & Cobb etc

wouldn't we also have to factor in that KC's defense had no preseason & their top CBs were L'Jarius Sneed, Antonio Hamilton, Rashad Fenton & Ward
That's most of the notes from the TV broadcast

Time for some sleep
