This tweet will be long but stick with it 👍
It's for the benefit of the #FBPE liars.
The common fisheries policy started in 1970 but the uk did not really sign up to all of it until 1995.
When i began fishing in 1993 we were already using quotas but not imposed by the EU. Part 1
Scottish fishermen were working with scientists to fish responsibly and we were happy to because we know our seas better than anyone and we know where fish move to.
When 1995 came British fishermen were worried about the coming changes. We saw a massive surge in Spanish boats /2
Then the French boats came and it became an issue.
After you sail past 12 miles off the uk coast the seas are legally anyone's from the Eu to fish.
The problem with that is not all species can be found that far out so they started fishing closer to our shores. Illegally part 3
As the 90s went on the quotas got stricter which put lots of British fishermen out of business because they were already struggling. This also raised fish prices so foreign vessels wanted more of our fish.
The CFP is reviewed every 3-5 years and by the end of the 90s quotas part4
Were being distributed unevenly then the EU imposed de commissioning on the uk fleet whilst giving grants to big EU co operatives to build super trawlers and other vessels.
The natural consequences of this was the reduction of our fleet by 2/3 and a gift of bigger quotas to /5
Non uk boats to fish in our own fishing grounds.
Not only this but French and Spanish boats regularly fished with illegal nets and crossed the 12 mile barrier until they were chased out.
After this the EU then restricted uk vessels days at sea first to 15 then to 10 days which /6
When boats need 20-25 days a month to keep afloat made many families bankrupt and forced many boat owners to scrap the boats beforehand.
This may not make sense to some but to keep a boat tied up costs £1000s .
What people fail to understand is that when boats were scrapped /7
The owners kept the licence in case better times came.
If you hold a licence you can apply for quota but if you have no boat how do you catch the quota?
In Scotland common practice was to hire out your quota to boats that were left so they could make ends meet without throwing /8
Fish back that they'd already caught which was a crazy practice suffered by many boats.
Unfortunately in the Sw of England Spanish businessman exploited this and bought co operatives which owned uo to 95 boats and registered them as uk companies and took the quotas.
This is /9
The fishing rights the FBPE keep citing as proof that we have no fishing rights left.
This was however an isolated example and the practice was uncovered and outlawed as Uk fishermen went ballistic and the EU were forced to make it illegal.
The irony though is the uk boats /10
Had such little quota by this time and were only allowed to fish very few days each month we could not have caught the fish by ourselves.
Imagine being a fisherman at sea for 10 days each time you catch loafs of fish you are told to throw them back because the quota belongs /11
To the French boat next to you who have 10 times more quota and no restriction on time at sea.
Even when they had it better they still break the rules.
All British fishermen wanted was fairness. Both tory and labour have sold us out over the years but we are very humble law /12
Abiding men and a lot of fishermen are religious because the industry is so dangerous.
When Brexit happened we didn't care who implemented it we were just so happy our time had come and many grown men who felt forgotten for so long were given hope again were in tears.
People /13
Have no idea how tough life at sea is and how hard we take it when we lose men.🙏
What hurts the most is seeing people with no idea about our life saying our jobs are insignificant and our communities don't matter.
Tim for change. Support our fishing industry👍
Thanks
Ps
I'm actually very emotional writing this as i think about the years of hard times we endured and how I'm so lucky to have lived for this time.
I've been overboard twice as a fisherman and survived but many of my friends never made it 🙏😇
I think I should take the time to thank all the people who read this and who have given their input and thanks to support our fishermen.
This means a lot especially when I get tired of arguing with #FBPE and now I have more people informed enough to step in God bless u all 👍🙏
