On this day in 1922, the Ottoman Sultanate was abolished after ruling for 600 years. At its peak, it included what is now Bulgaria, Egypt, Greece, Hungary, Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Macedonia, Romania, Syria, parts of Arabia and the north coast of Africa.

Sultan Bayezid II sent the Ottoman navy to Spain in order to save the Jewish people. Jews totalling 100,000 were given Ottoman citizenship under the Millet system.
