The thing is, most of my family back home are hardcore Trump supporters and I don’t think they’re ‘white nationalists.’ They might be pretty un-woke on racial justice issues, but I think their fuel is grievance politics and the ‘liberal tears’ Trump is able to deliver daily. https://twitter.com/accidentalflyer/status/1323558391248084994
There was definitely a ‘white nationalist’ subtext to Trump’s 2016 campaign that, ofc, persists today. But third party efforts to mobilize around this (see: Spencer, Richard) got a lot of attention in 2017 but the movement flamed out after Charlottesville.
The Alt Right died years ago. No other GOP politician can use racial ‘foghorns’ like Trump gets away with. How, exactly, Trump ‘gets away with it’ is an enduring mystery, but every day he crosses red lines other Republicans can’t get within a mile of without resigning in disgrace
Most of us don’t ‘get’ the grievance politics side of this on the other side (because it’s neither coherent or rational). The grievances are _sometimes_ about race, most of their racial hangups can’t be described as ‘hate’ - which is mostly reserved for other white people.
They hate Fauci and everything he represents. One thing they all seem to hate is [stereotypically] decades of saving for their kid’s college fund, but that money now pays the salaries of white commie Women’s Lit and Critical Race Theory professors that ‘indoctrinate’ the youth.
