Weird how addiction is the only MI where people are actively encouraged to self-DX. Kinda think tht may not be a good thing. I've seen a ton of ppl go from self-med to other, quieter toxic coping mechanisms bc the root problem isn't addressed.
APD is absolutely a real thing, and addiction is a disease but like... a lot of people are just fkn suffering and trying to cope, and it's fckd that substance use is often treated as the only prob, putting people's pain and mental health on the back burner.
This sets people up for failure, bc if you're still hurting and your cope is taken away wtf do you do? The root prob is now worse, it sets ppl up for relapse or other toxic copes. Not to mention the recovery industry's revolving door policies and all that.
Also how mental healthcare in the US basically sets you up to be sui* before you can get any help, and I v strongly feel the way we treat substance use/abuse in medical settings contributes to this and accelerates that process.
This is getting ranty but like when I was going thru alc withdrawal the hospital had me talk to a social worker, I brought up mult times that I had severe anxiety, PTSD, panic disorder, needed help. I was only ever referred to AA or recovery programs & told I was an alcoholic.
And like maybe I am but it's super sus that since starting therapy and being prescribed a low dose benzo (0.5mg xan I take maybe once a week) I have no problem staying sober. Treatment I specifically requested BEFORE I ever started binge drinking.
