This is the first election I haven’t covered as a reporter since 2010.
It’s also the first time I cast a ballot in any election since 2008.
Let me explain.

When I decided to become a reporter, I made a choice: So long as I covered politics, I wouldn’t vote.
In my mind, taking my own political decision out of the equation would help me better inform countless other voters making their own choice.

I wrestled with it but it was the right choice for me. It’s certainly not right/necessary for everyone.
I’ve worked with hundreds of reporters. There are less than a handful of whom I could say which candidates/party they may support. Few, if any, could say the same of me.

This isn’t an ode to objectivity above all else in journalism.
It’s recognition that journalists across the country sacrifice better-paying careers, privacy, job security, and yes, even their civic duty for the sheer sake of seeking the truth and reporting it as best they can.

Today and for days on end, demonization of “the media” may reach a new pitch.
Newsrooms have some real issues, including bias. But move beyond network panels & talking heads, and “the media” is an assortment of thousands in the trenches, just working to inform people.

If you’ve followed me for more than a day, you’ve probably seen me say (repeatedly) how glad I am to have left political journalism behind.
But I remain in awe of the @AP. Being involved in election race calling was exhilarating. I don’t miss much, but I do miss that.

There may be confusion and accusations surrounding the verdict voters have cast. It may not come tonight. Some may try to weaponize that.
Take it from someone who saw firsthand: If you can trust anything, you can trust the @AP, where it is based 100% on data and nothing else.

I’m happy to be casting my ballot for the first time in more than a decade.
I’m even happier and more grateful to know that there are good journalists across the country we can rely on to help tell us what happens tonight and moving forward.
