Jimmy Ratter - brilliant botanist and world expert on the flora of central Brazil - passed away yesterday aged 86. He was colleague, mentor and friend to myself and hundreds more over his six decade career @RBGE_Science
Jim was tireless in his promotion of conservation in Brazil's cerrado savannas throughout the 1970s and 1980s, when their plight and biological importance was little recognised even within Brazil, let alone internationally
Jim's achievements perhaps did not receive the wider recognition within the UK that they deserved but in Brazil he was awarded the Grã-Cruz da Ordem Nacional do Mérito Cientifico, one of the highest scientific accolades to be given by the Brazilian Government
I was feeling too sad to give this news yesterday, but Jim's life deserves celebration. He loved Brazil and for those of you there, he'd be happy to know you were raising a glass of cerveja Antarctica to his memory
Uma pessoa especial que permanecerá nos nossos pensamentos, illuminando nossas ideias e lutas na defesa de conservação dos biomas tropicais (palavras de Haroldo Cavalcante de Lima, JBRJ). Que ele descanse em paz.
