So I've said for the past four years that EVERYTHING @realdonaldtrump does can be traced to the USFL, a long-ago spring football league that existed from 1983-85. And, as the author of a USFL book, I can say, once again, it's true tonight. [1]
Back in the day, Trump owned the New Jersey Generals of the USFL, with the hope of leveraging it into getting his own NFL team. He had already made an effort to purchase the NFL's Baltimore Colts from the Irsay family, but with no luck. So he hatched a plan: Get into the [2]
USFL, and somehow force his way into the bigger league. But ... nothing worked. He held a secret meeting with the NFL commissioner, and offered to throw the USFL under the bus in exchange for the NFL franchise. He told him to fuck off. [3]
He tried making inroads with other NFL owners—no luck. The NFL had no interest in Trump. None. Zero. Zip. He was a huckster and a conman, and the league knew it. Sooo ... Trump bought into the USFL, with the 100% intent of using it to enter the NFL. He owned the Generals for [4]
two seasons—and from the very beginning worked to convince the other USFL owners that they were making a huge mistake staying in the spring, and that they should directly challenge the NFL by A. Announcing a move to fall; B. Suing the NFL for monopolizing fall TV [5]
The other owners were initially put off. The had started the USFL to be a SPRING league. But Trump lied and bullied, bullied and lied. He told the other owners the three major TV networks desperately wanted fall USFL programing—total bullshit. He said there was huge money ... [6]
waiting. So the other owners followed @realdonaldtrump, and the league announced a planned 1986 shift to fall, as well as a lawsuit against the NFL. The league sought damages of $567 million dollars which, when trebled, would amount to more than $1.7 billion. [7]
Trump GUARANTEED the other owners the lawsuit would make them all rich. But, truth be told, he didn't give two shits about the other owners. His plan: We sue, the NFL freaks out, announces a limited NFL-USFL merger and gives Trump a New York franchise. So the lawsuit ... [8]
commenced, because Trump's lifelong go-to is to sue. And, once the trial began, Donald Trump made Donald Trump the USFL star witness. And, just like now, he's lying, exaggerating, making repeated untrue claims. The lawuit, of course, wound up a disaster. The USFL was awarded [9]
$1, tripled to three because of antitrust laws. And the No. 1 reasons (jurors told me) the lawsuit failed: @realdonaldtrump. The USFL had a decent argument, but Trump was so unlikable, so dishonest, so slimy—he was blamed for the USFL's failings. So as we see Trump [10]
planning all these lawsuits, just know it's a 34-year-old methodology, and he's as full of shit now as he was in 1986. #
PS: This was sent to Trump by a fellow owner, John Bassett. It's the best letter ever written. By anyone. ##
